In 1873 nine local clubs in the Midlands and North united to form a federation and in 1882 the society was reconstituted on amalgamated principles and took the name Amalgamated Slaters of England Provident Society, becoming the Amalgamated Slaters' and Tilers' Provident Society of England and Ireland (ASTPS) in 1886. In 1946 the society changed its name to the Amalgamated Slaters', Tilers' and Roofing Operatives' Society (ASTRO). In 1969 it transferred engagements to the Amalgamated Union of Building Trade Workers (AUBTW).
