Sidney Stringer was Leader of the Labour majority on Coventry City Council, 1938-67, having worked in the engineering industry, until blacklisted in 1932, and subsequently as a mutuality collector. He came to national notice in 1954 when he moved the motion for the City Council to abandon civil defence provision.
