Montford Geoffrey 'Monty' Hughes (born 28 January 1919) worked as a senior technical records clerk at the British Steel Corporation (formerly John Summers & Sons) steelworks, Shotton. He was a member of the Shotton Trades Union Congress Steel Industry Consultative Committee, 1973-1980, in which capacity he was closely involved in the preparation and presentation of alternative strategies for the future of the works. He was also chairman of the Shotton Steelworkers' Action Committee (sometimes referred to as the Shotton Steelworks Action Committee or the Shotton Steelworkers' Action Campaign Committee), 1976-1980, and served as secretary and chairman of the Hawarden Central (Unemployed) ISTC branch. The deposit reflects all these activities, and work in connection with Bidston Steel Mill closure.
