The Steel Ingot Makers' Association was formed by a resolution on 7 December 1900 by employers meeting under the title of the Siemens Steel Ingot-making Trade of the North of England and West of Scotland. It held its first meeting in January 1901. In 1922 it amalgamated with the North of England Iron and Steel Manufacturers' Association (with whom it had shared a secretary based in Middlesbrough) and a number of other bodies to form the Iron and Steel Trades Employers' Association.
