Part 1: her up-bringing and education in Vienna; economic hardship there after the First World War; development of her interest in socialism and ideas of Leonard Nelson; her experiences in east end of London as a political refugee during Second World War, including strong community spirit; influence of Kant on Nelson’s philosophy; need for members of the Internationaler Sozialistischer Kampfbund (Militant Socialist International) engaged in clandestine resistance to the Nazi regime to depart to some extent from Nelson’s insistence on speaking the truth; Nelson’s disillusionment with the Soviet regime in 1926; emphasis of ISK on resisting Nazism through propaganda rather than violent action; their motivation for resistance.
Part 2: activities of Miller and other German political refugees in Britain during Second World War; appeasement of Hitler; Miller’s admiration of Londoners during the Blitz; Bad Godesberg Programme of the German Social Democratic Party of 1959, and subsequent programmes influenced by it; need to address continuing division between east and west within Germany and Europe generally; contribution of Nelson’s followers to political dialogue. Questions and comments from the audience: interest in political philosophy in Bulgaria; school founded by Nelson; activities of Federal Union during Second World War.
