The Federation was established in January 1947 to promote and protect the interests of its members in relation to the employment of labour on the setting, resetting and repair of carbonising and gas-making plant, boiler settings, chimneys and furnaces, and is still active. Its original members were the Society of British Gas Industries (Sections 1 and 18), the Association of Boiler Setters, Chimney and Furnace Constructors, the Society of Furnace Builders, and the Federation of Gas Employers.
The Gas Retort Contractors' Conference existed from 1949, later becoming the Gas Refractories' Contractors' Conference. In 1973, it amalgamated with the Coke Oven Contractors' Association (MSS.91/CO) to form the Gas Refractories' and Coke Oven Contractors' Association. This organisation later (before 1986) joined the Oil and Chemical Plant Constructors' Association (MSS.91/OCP).
