The union was founded in March 1896 as the Postal Telegraph Linemen and Mechanics' Association of the United Kingdom. It changed its name to the Amalgamated Association of the Postal Telegraph Engineering Department in August 1896. In 1901 it merged with the Postal Telegraph and Linemen's Movement to become the Post Office Engineering and Stores Association.
