This union was formed as a result of the amalgamation of the National Union of Printing and Paper Workers (NUPPW) with the National Union of Bookbinders' and Machine Rulers in 1921. The National Union of Printing, Bookbinding, Machine Ruling and Paper Workers (NUPBMRPW) became known as the NUPBPW from 1928 and itself absorbed many smaller associated societies and unions. The NUPBPW joined with the National Society of Operative Printers and Assistants to form the Society of Graphical and Allied Trades (SOGAT) in 1966, though it retained its independence within SOGAT as Division A. NATSOPA was identified as SOGAT Division 1.
