This body and the North East Coast and Scottish Steel Makers' Association comprised the Heavy Steel Associations which were members of the British Steel Producers' Conference, which was affiliated to the British Iron and Steel Federation. It and the North East Coast and Scottish Steel Makers' Association were succeeded in 1965 by the British Heavy Steel Association.

The deposits made in the Centre by British Steel plc include records of the Midland Steel Anglemakers' Association, of one of the MWSMA's predecessors, and the North East Coast and Scotttish Steel Makers' Association. The largest part of these deposits is formed by the records of the British Iron and Steel Federation (BISF) and its predecessor, the National Federation of Iron and Steel Manufacturers. The deposits also include records of a number of regional and sectional iron and steel employers' organisations associated with the BISF, the statutory Iron and Steel Board and the nationalised British Steel Corporation.
