Lock was born in 1933, left school at 15 and, following National Service with the Royal Signals, entered the printing industry. He worked for Waterlows and then for various newspapers, including the 'Evening News' and the 'Daily Mirror'. After many years in the printing industry he was made redundant and subsequently worked for the Ministry of Defence as a messenger until he retired in the 1990s.
