  • Steve Jefferys was an undergraduate at the London School of Economics (LSE) between 1965-8, where he was a leading student activist. After graduating in 1968, he worked as a plant operator at Chrysler Scotland between 1969-1972 (where he was also an Amalgamated Union of Engineering Workers (AUEW) shop steward), and later worked as a journalist in Glasgow and London. He joined the International Socialists (IS) in 1968 and was elected to the National Committee in 1970. He acted as full-time Industrial Organiser for IS (later the Socialist Workers' Party) between 1974-79. In 1980 Jefferys began his PhD at the University of Warwick on the unionisation of the Chrysler Dodge Main plant in the USA (completed in 1984); and has subsequently worked as an academic at several English universities, most recently (2009) at London Metropolitan University.
