  • The Institute of Personnel Management derived from a conference held at York in 1913. The conference wanted to improve working and social conditions and to consider workers as individuals. Its continuous existence as a central organisation dates from a later conference held at Leeds in 1917 when the name of the Central Association of Welfare Workers (Industrial) was adopted. On 28 November 1919, it amalgamated with the North Western Area Industrial Welfare Association and the Welfare Workers' Institute to form a new Welfare Workers' Institute. The institute changed its name a further three times, first in 1924 to the Institute of Industrial Welfare Workers, in 1931 to the Institute of Labour Management, and in 1946 to the Institute of Personnel Management. Merger with the Institute of Training and Development on 1 July 1994 led to the adoption of the title of the Institute of Personnel and Development. The Institute of Personnel and Development became the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) on 1 July 2000. In 2002 the CIPD had 110,000 members. It should be noted that M.M. Niven comments in her book, 'Personnel Management 1913-1963' (London, 1967) on the destruction of "many useful papers" on the requisitioning of the Institute's office in June 1940 (p.104).
  • There are no restrictions on access to these records, but the text of any publication based on unpublished records is to be submitted to the director of the Institute before publication.
