The National Union of County Officers (NUCO) was formed in 1930 from the Poor Law Officers' Union. It became the Hospital and Welfare Services Union (HWSU) in 1943. The union developed a unique sectional or "guild" system of union organisation, the most successful of which was the NUCO's Guild of Nurses. In 1946 the union merged with the Mental Hospital and Institutional Workers' Union to form the Confederation of Health Service Employees (COHSE).
