The General Union of Carpenters and Joiners [GUCJ] was founded in 1827 as the Friendly Society of Operative House Carpenters and Joiners of Great Britain and Ireland. It was also known as the Friendly Operative Carpenters and Joiners' General Union of Great Britain. The union merged with the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters, Cabinetmakers and Joiners to form the Amalgamated Society of Woodworkers in 1921.
