The General, Municipal, Boilermakers and Allied Trades Union was formed in 1982 by the merger of the General and Municipal Workers' Union and the Amalgamated Society of Boilermakers, Shipwrights, Blacksmiths and Structural Workers. It has since absorbed the Amalgamated Textile Workers' Union in 1985, the North West Lancashire, Durham and Cumbria Textile Workers' Union in 1986, the Greater London Council Staff Association in 1987, the Association of Professional, Executive, Clerical and Computer Staff in 1989, the National Union of Tailors and Garment Workers in 1991 and the Furniture, Timber and Allied Trades Union in 1994. In 1987 it adopted the abbreviated title GMB.
