This is a complex compendium, basically comprising memoranda, 1890-1902, compiled by Wells when on business trips seeking orders, fixed into an indexed press-cuttings book. To this have been added some other notes, mostly dating from the 1940s. Firms visited included cycle and motor manufacturers, agricultural engineers, millers, ironworks, colliery companies and electricity works. Some foreign business is recorded. For further details, see 'Selling lubricants at the turn of the century', 'Business Archives', no 46, 1980.
