Born out of the Linemen's Movements in the 1870s, the Postal Telegraph and Linemen's Movement was established in 1887. In 1896 the Amalgamated Association of the Postal Telegraph Engineering Department was established and in 1901 this organisation merged with the Postal Telegraph and Linemen's Movement to form the Post Office Engineering and Stores Association. This union merged with the Amalgamated Society of Telephone Employees in 1915 to form the Post Office Amalgamated Engineering and Stores Association, the forerunner of the Post Office Engineering Union.
