Hauliers featured in this correspondence range from national concerns such as Carter, Paterson & Co., Pickfords Ltd. and National Parcels & Goods Services, to local contractors such as W. Miles, Northampton and Leslie Walkley, Cinderford, as well as regional operators such as Bradford-Leicester Transport Ltd. and PX Ltd., and some passenger transport undertakings, such as United Automobile Services Ltd. Some of the correspondence is of a routine or trivial nature, but numerous letter-heads are informative, listing, for example, directors, depots, towns served, principal customers. The NCPC was formed as the result of a conference at the Imperial Hotel, Birmingham, on 28 Sep 1937 to which all carriers with whom Red Arrow Deliveries (Dunbar's firm) had working arrangements were invited. The government's expressed intention that a proper rates structure should be established for the road transport industry was a principal motivating factor in bringing together parcels carriers, who were conscious of the special problems and costs of their sector of road haulage.
