In the 1970s, Martin C Davis, then a senior lecturer at Coventry Polytechnic, undertook research into the history of the Council for National Academic Awards. In 1979 he was awarded a PhD by the University of Loughborough for his thesis 'The Council for National Academic Awards, 1964-1974: A Study of a Validating Agency' (MSS.372/CNAA/76). He was later appointed an HM Inspector of Schools.
Harold Silver was a member of the CNAA from 1982 to 1986 and continued Davis's research into that body, publishing 'A higher education: the Council for National Academic Awards and British higher education 1964-1989' in 1990.
