Born in 1845, George Frederic Agna Charlton began life as a colliery joiner, although a family tradition held that he was originally a schoolmaster in Houghton-le-Spring. Later he became a shaftman, and an engineer at Evenwood colliery. He died in a mining accident at Shildon Lodge colliery in 1888, aged 43.
