The Regional Directorate was formed in 1965 under the directorship of H.J. Gray. When regional affairs were transferred to the Administration Directorate in 1967, the Regional Directorate ceased to exist. Gray became Director of Legal Affairs, which in 1969 became the Legal Affairs and Smaller Firms Directorate. Gray was succeeded by N. Tate in 1972 and a year later the Directorate was restyled Regional and Smaller Firms. In 1978 it split into Regional under Tate and Smaller Firms under J.C.H. Meakin. Under Sonia Elkin (a former Director of both the separate directorates) the two were reunited and once again called Regional and Smaller Firms. In 1992 it was absorbed by the Membership Directorate. All files which derive from the above directorates before 1992 are listed here under the umbrella title of Regional and Smaller Firms Directorate. The continuity of file series rarely alters despite the many changes of directorate.
