John Emerson Harding Davies was born on 8th Jan 1916. He joined the Anglo-Iranian Oil Corporation (later BP) in 1946, becoming the London vice-chairman and managing director from 1961-5. From 1970-8 he was Conservative MP for Knutsford and served as Minister of Technology in 1970, Secretary of State for Trade and Industry and President of the Board of Trade from 1970-2, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster 1972-4 and shadow Foreign Secretary from 1976-8. He died in Jul 1979.
