The Geriatric Group of the Institute of Almoners was formed from the metropolitan regions and held its first meeting on 18 January 1951, although it originated with a group formed in the almoners' department of the Middlesex County Hospitals in the late 1930s. An informal meeting convened by the Metropolitan Geriatric Group met on 18 April 1958 to discuss the formation of a National Geriatric Group. A sub-committee met on 17 July 1958, the inaugural meeting of this group was held 21 March 1959, and from then on it met regularly twice a year. After the almoners were absorbed into BASW in 1970, the group continued under its auspices (initially as the Geriatric Special Interest Group) until it was disbanded at a general meeting on October 2002, as new officers were not forthcoming.
