This Working Party was set up at the beginning of 1971 by the Professional Development and Practice Committee to write a draft code of ethics. It met seven times. It considered that implicit in social work practice are ethical principles which prescribe the professional responsibility of the social worker. A draft code was completed by the end of 1971. The Working Party met on 16 May 1975, its last meeting having been 9 October 1973. It was urged that public interest in the regulation of the social work profession and of social workers made the effort to provide an agreed code of ethics more urgent. A code of ethics was presented to the committee on 23 May 1975 with the recommendation that it be presented to Council for approval and adoption by the Annual General Meeting in October 1975. The code was duly adopted.
