"This was Bookmarks' only attempt to pay an advance to an author. Copies of the outline were circulated to all members of the SWP Central Committee. Jonathan N was attempting to make a living as a writer at the time and I argued that we should contribute to his wages, just as writers on Socialist Worker were paid. The project was rejected as 'too ambitious'; the proposal for payment rejected out of hand" [Peter Marsden].
