In 1947 it was proposed to establish a Field Investigation Section of the National Coal Board Scientific Department "to carry out factual investigations to apply scientific methods to the analysis of data and to report impartially on the information obtained." (memorandum of December 1946 in 649/1/8/1). The Group was established in 1948 and became the Operational Research Branch in 1962 and the Operational Research Executive in 1970. From April 1992 the Operational Research Executive ceased to be part of the British Coal Corporation, with operational research services being provided to the Corporation by Hoskyns Group plc (see 649/1/8/56).
