This material was mainly assembled by George Bain and Robert Price with the assistance of Margaret Morgan. It includes information derived from the figures collected by the Ministry of Labour from 1892. It was the basis for several publications, including 'The growth of white-collar unionism' (1970), 'Union growth and the business cycle: an econometric analysis' (1976), and 'Profiles of union growth: a comparative statistical portrait of eight countries' (1980). It was jointly deposited by Sir George Bain and Jeremy Waddington, who continued to work on it after he left the University of Warwick for the University of Manchester.
