Marsh states that the Amalgamated Society of Metal Planers, Shapers, Slotters, Horizontal Borers and Milling Machine Workers was founded in 1867 but membership records imply the existence of some branches in 1859 (see below, MSS.259/MP/7/1/2). The Union's membership was similar to the membership of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers and the Union found itself in competition with other similar Unions to recruit new members. The Union was one of the founder members of the Federation of Engineering and Shipbuilding Trades which was formed in 1891. The Union merged with the Amalgamated Society of Engineers in 1894 when it had 1,414 members.
