The National Union of Clerks was formed in 1890 and changed its name to the National Union of Clerks and Administrative Workers in 1920. In 1941 it amalgamated with the Association of Women Clerks and Secretaries under the new name of the Clerical and Administrative Workers' Union. In 1972 the union changed its name to the Association of Professional, Executive, Clerical and Computer Staff, known as APEX. In 1989 APEX merged with the General, Municipal, Boilermakers and Allied Trades Union.
