The visit was part of an initiative to encourage girls to undertake university education in Canada and also to study the Higher Education system in Canada. The invitations to participate were issued by a special committee chaired by Miss L. S. Amery.
The diary includes details of the names of those who accepted the invitation to participate in the tour. Details of the sailing, meetings, names of hosts in Canada, correspondence, newspaper cuttings, photographs, including of headmistresses, and printed pamphlets of universities visited and ephemera.
Presented to the Association of Head Mistresses by Miss Macauley of St Leonard's School, St Andrew's, Fife in 1956.
