The Association of Community Workers (ACW) was formally inaugurated in 1968 with the aim of bringing together people with a common interest in the development of community work as a professional disciple. The ACW Council, which oversaw the running of the Association, included a number of committees such as the Training Committee and the Constitutional Review Sub-committee. By 1971 the Association's membership had grown to more than two hundred and thirty. Among the ACW committees in 1978 were the following: Network Development Group; Publication Group; Editorial Group; Policy Group; Conference Group; Disputes and Employment Group. The Association depended on subscriptions for its income in addition to revenue from sales of publications.
