Report of discussion between Hobsbawm, Lal Jayawardena, Romila Thapar, Bernard Williams, Jean Drèze, Emma Rothschild, Marian Ostrowski, Siddiq Osmani, Kumari Jayawardena, Prafulla Sanghvi, Amiya Bagchi, Gareth Stedman-Jones and Amartya Sen. Meeting arranged in response to the collapse of Communism and the question that "in abandoning central planning doesn't one also throw out the socialist baby with the bath water?", and to define "what elements of socialism are compatible with the evolving new dispensation in Eastern Europe". Hobsbawm opened the discussion.
