These registers were created as part of a record keeping system which was discontinued in about 1951. A large number of files created under the old system were transferred to the new "Kardex" record keeping system which constitutes MSS.237/3/1/1-408 and MSS.237/3/2/1-18. Case files transferred to the new system were given new references: these have been pencilled into the case registers.
The value of the case registers lies mainly in the information they contain about industrial relations "cases" in respect of which files were created but subsequently destroyed.
MSS.237/3/12/1-23 (1892-1936) are case registers in the contemporary Civil Service style. Each case is entered in chronological order and a brief description of the issue(s) and outcome is given. Each volume contains a substantial subject and Local Association name index.
MSS.237/3/12/24-37 (1937-50) are different from the earlier volumes in several respects: the issue(s) in each case are recorded but not the outcome; the volumes are arranged, like bound indexes, by the names of Local Associations and under various broad subject headings; cases may be entered more than once, under appropriate subject headings and the name(s) of Local Associations.
