  • Subjects include: her dispensing training and early experience in London in the 1920s; her interest in philosophy and ideas; her involvement from the 1930s in left-wing politics, including joining the Communist Party in 1939; the divisions between dispensers and pharmacists, the nature of their work, their social background and their representation in negotiations on pay and conditions (side A); her involvement in hospital trade unionism from the 1940s onwards (side B). Duration: 47 minutes 13 seconds on side A; 47 minutes 27 seconds on side B.

  • Lily Mitchell was a leading member of the Voluntary Hospitals Guild and was the Hospitals and Welfare Services Union's delegate to the Socialist Medical Association. She worked at Moorfields Hospital in London from 1949 until retirement her in 1964.
