The Employment Affairs Directorate existed from 1965 to 1995 under the following names : Labour and Social Affairs (1965-7); Industrial Affairs (1967-78); Social Affairs (1978-86); and Employment Affairs (1986-95). Its primary responsibility was to undertake all work concerned with the relationship between employers and employees, incl. health and safety, pensions and industrial relations.

A certain amount of flexibility has been necessary in the arrangement of the files due to the complexity of the organisation and the frequent movement of personnel and portfolios between departments. In general, files have been arranged according to the individual committees, working parties, panels and departments which created them. The directorate's structure is complicated by an added tier of administration, namely the division, and by a number of corresponding and supplemental departments. Furthermore, at times a division becomes a department or vice versa, losing or gaining portfolios. However, distinct divisional records have not survived. Where files have passed through several cttees., they have been listed with the primary committee responsible. Series of files have not been broken up where individual files in the series predate the foundation of the CBI but the series itself continues into the CBI.
