This committee held its first meeting on 3 July 1970 as the Interim Sectional Committee on Physical Illness and Handicap. In January 1971 the section was numbered as Section I - Physical Illness and Handicap. In January 1972 the committee became the National Sectional Committee. By 1974 the section was also known as Section I - Physical Health and Handicap and Section I - General Health and Handicap. By November 1974 the committee was the National Committee for General Health: Section I and by February 1975 it was the General Health Committee. It was abolished when the society was restructured in 1979. The committee dealt with social work in general healthcare and in relation to physically handicapped and disabled people.
