Following the failure at the annual general meeting in 1977 of a motion to open membership of BASW to those occupying a post that would appropriately be filled by a social worker, a group of interested members formed this committee. The first campaign meeting was held 29 October 1977. A survey of non-members was held in 1978. A paper issued by the group in Summer 1978, refers to the fears of those opposed to open membership.
