  • The Association of Scientific, Technical and Managerial Staffs was formed in 1968 by the amalgamation of the Association of Supervisory Staffs, Executives and Technicians (ASSET) and the Association of Scientific Workers. Following the amalgamation the union enjoyed a period of unprecedented growth and became the UK's largest union of salaried staff. Whilst the bulk of this growth was due to recruitment, part of it was due to further amalgamations and the union absorbed a number of smaller societies. In 1988 it merged with the Technical, Administrative and Supervisory Section (TASS) to form Manufacturing, Science, Finance. Reference: George S. Bain, Growth of white-collar unionism (Clarendon : Oxford, 1970); Clive Jenkins and Barrie Sherman, White collar unionism : the rebellious salariat (Routledge and Kegan Paul, 1979).
  • Records both of the ASTMS and its predecessor the Association of Supervisory Staffs, Executives and Technicians (ASSET) were catalogued together in 1987 and 1989 under the reference MSS.79/AS. These records were recatalogued in 2006 and 2007 so as to separate the records of the two bodies. But the ASTMS archive still includes a substantial quantity which pre-date that body's formation and were probably mainly inherited from ASSET, although a few originated with the Association of Scientific Workers (AScW). At least some of the records of these predecessors were probably incorporated into ASTMS's record-keeping system where they closely related to ASTMS's own records.
  • The approval of Unite, the successor union, is to be sought for the publication of previously unpublished material. Unpublished records in this collection which are under 30 years old are closed. Records containing sensitive personal data are closed for longer periods to ensure compliance with the Data Protection Act 1998.
